Vold Vision Horizon West: A 17,102 SF Eye Surgery Center Is Planned on Porter Road
Vold Vision, the Winter Garden ophthalmology practice led by Dr. Steven Vold, has plans for a purpose-built eye surgery center on Porter Road in Hamlin. The site sits in the same stretch as Orlando Health Horizon West Hospital and Central Florida’s first osteopathic medical school, adding a specialty layer to a corridor already defined by healthcare.

Jared Jones sees the project as a meaningful win for the people who already live along this corridor: specialty eye surgery that today can mean a longer drive could soon be a few minutes from home. In his view, it also strengthens what is becoming a medical mile in Horizon West. What is Vold Vision Horizon West?
Vold Vision Horizon West is the planned new home of Vold Vision, an ophthalmology practice and research facility led by Dr. Steven D. Vold. The practice already serves patients in Winter Garden from a suite at 1002 South Dillard Street, and its own website notes that the team is awaiting a new state-of-the-art facility.
The Porter Road building would give the practice a purpose-built space instead of a leased suite. That matters for an eye surgery practice, where operating rooms, diagnostic equipment and patient flow drive the floor plan more than they would in a typical medical office.
Where is the Vold Vision Horizon West site on Porter Road?
Plans place the 17,102-square-foot building along Porter Road in the Hamlin area, west of Avalon Road and close to State Road 429. That puts it in the same stretch as Orlando Health Horizon West Hospital at 17000 Porter Road and near the Orlando College of Osteopathic Medicine campus on Kiran Patel Drive.
Hamlin is already the commercial center of this part of Horizon West, with shopping, dining and a growing list of approved projects such as the Life Time athletic club approved for Hamlin. The Hamlin area guide covers home types, fees and what else is in the pipeline nearby, and the Horizon West villages and neighborhoods overview shows how Hamlin fits into the larger map.
Jared walks through new construction, Hamlin’s commercial core and the infrastructure shaping Winter Garden in 2026.
What eye care services will the new center offer?
Vold Vision lists a full range of surgical eye care. On the cataract side, the practice offers both traditional and laser cataract surgery using the LenSx femtosecond laser, along with premium lens options such as trifocal, extended-depth and light adjustable lenses. It also treats glaucoma, cornea conditions and dry eye.
For vision correction, the practice lists LASIK, SMILE Pro, PRK, EVO ICL and custom lens replacement. The practice states that patients have traveled from all 50 states and more than 25 countries for surgery with Dr. Vold, and it runs a medical travel program with concierge help on lodging and transportation. A larger, dedicated building gives that model more room to grow in West Orange County.
What do the plans show about the building?
The plans describe a building designed around sensitive medical equipment. Portions of the structure are set up to limit natural light, which supports the diagnostic and surgical work done inside. The main entrance faces Porter Road with a recessed entry and a canopy, and separate access points are planned for patients and staff.
The project also comes with roadwork. A new westbound left turn lane on Porter Road is required so vehicles can turn into the site without stacking in the travel lane. No construction start or opening date has been published with the plans so far.
The Porter Road medical corridor by the numbers
The eye surgery center adds to a hospital campus and a medical school that already anchor this stretch of Horizon West.
How does this fit Horizon West’s growing medical corridor?
Healthcare has been part of the plan for this site for decades. Orlando Health Horizon West Hospital traces its roots to land purchased in 2000, opened its emergency room and medical pavilion in 2018, and opened the 6-story, 214,000-square-foot hospital on January 30, 2021, with room to expand. The Orlando College of Osteopathic Medicine then opened next door in 2024.
A specialty surgical practice is a natural next layer. Hospitals and medical schools tend to draw physician offices, outpatient centers and support services around them, the same pattern that has shaped larger campuses like the AdventHealth Orlando expansion downtown. Alongside retail such as the Home Depot proposed near SR 429 and the new Horizon West library opening this month, the Porter Road corridor is filling in with everyday services that used to require a drive toward Dr. Phillips or downtown Orlando.
A light real estate read
For the Hamlin pocket, a medical office of this kind is a quiet neighbor. Traffic follows appointment schedules rather than evening crowds, and the required turn lane is meant to keep Porter Road moving. Buyers looking at homes off Porter Road or Avalon Road should still drive the corridor at morning and afternoon peaks, since medical, retail and school traffic all share it.
The bigger signal is maturity. Horizon West started as a collection of villages built around rooftops; projects like this show the services catching up. If you are comparing Ovation and Hamlin for new construction, or weighing a resale in an established village, proximity to everyday healthcare is one more practical factor to put on the list. The Takeaway
Vold Vision is planning a 17,102-square-foot eye surgery center on Porter Road in Hamlin, a step up from its current Winter Garden suite and a new specialty anchor beside Orlando Health Horizon West Hospital and the region’s osteopathic medical school.
The next milestones are county review, the Porter Road turn lane and a construction start. Once those land, Horizon West residents will have surgical eye care in the same corridor as their hospital.
